I just saw Michael Simon and Andrew Pery present a fascinating discussion at the ABA Tech Show, and I knew it was something I had to share with all of you. Their talk focused on how attorneys can make robots work for them, and today, they’re going to share how solo and small firm practitioners can use artificial intelligence and robots to grow or optimize their firms.

Michael is an eDiscovery and information governance expert and the Principal (and Ronin) at Seventh Samurai. He was also an early innovator using electronic evidence in cases. Andrew is a marketing executive with a lot of experience in content management and business process automation, and he actually earned a Master’s of Law before he fell into the tech world. These two are now collaborating on a number of different products, one of which you may hear about any day now...

Kimberly Bennett runs a boutique trademark and business strategy practice out of Atlanta that provides a subscription service for businesses all around the country. It is a flat fee for virtual general counsel law services, and it just might offer a glimpse at the future of professional service business models.

I’d never really considered a subscription-based business model for law firms before talking to Kimberly, and it really was an eye-opening conversation for me – and I think it will be for many of you, too. She’s really passionate about driving the industry forward and changing some of our traditional law firm mindsets, and I am all for it.

Chris Godfrey is an estate planning and elder law attorney out of South Bend, Indiana, which is also where he studied law at Notre Dame after competing as a professional football player for nine years. Chris’s family members also lend their assistance to the practice, creating a very homey and familial space to develop his firm.

We discuss the flexibility of estate planning and elder law, the technology he uses for scheduling and billing, experiments with different marketing strategies, and moving away from a transactional business model towards a relationship-based business model.

All the way back in episode 7, Lynette Whitfield discussed an incubator called Law Entrepreneurs for Action (LEAP) designed to help recent law school graduates go directly into private practice. Well, today, we’re talking to a young solo attorney who got her start in one of these incubator programs: Kate DeNobile.

Kate now has a thriving practice, DeNobile Law, and we talk about how the incubator process helped prepare her for running a solo practice straight out of law school, why she chose to work a side gig while her practice was getting up and running, and the technology she uses to run her practice.

Cary Jacobson is a family law attorney, with a unique twist: she advocates on behalf of people who are looking to get divorced with a minimum of drama. And that’s not an oxymoron – you CAN have a family law case without a lot of drama or histrionics. So, today, we will take a peek into Cary’s practice, how she settled into this niche, and how she operates a mostly virtual practice.

Christina Daves is a self-taught publicity expert and the author of PR for Anyone: 100+ Affordable Ways to Easily Create Buzz. She can help just about anyone get more attention from media outlets, which is an area that small firm practitioners are woefully underserved.

You might think that the only opportunities for small firm practitioners to get media publicity are that interview on the courthouse steps or getting lucky enough to be invited onto the news as an expert, but there are more opportunities than you might think – and Christina is going to help us uncover them.

Margeaux Thomas is a solo practitioner who specializes in commercial business litigation, and I thought it would be interesting to get the perspective of a solo practitioner who isn’t in one of the more typical practice areas of estate planning, family law, or personal injury.

Margeaux offers an interesting perspective on overcoming the trials and tribulations of opening a practice – including the impressive feat of launching a solo practice with twins on the way! – and how she’s been able to keep growing the business.

DK Raymer is the Founder of Confident Aging for Attorneys, a program that assists attorneys with the communication challenges that often accompany working with Seniors and their families so that they can better protect their clients. The program was created primarily for Elder Law and Estate Planning, but DK has a lot of great tips that can help any attorney better understand and communicate with their target audience.

The email inbox can be the bane of an attorney’s existence, easily stealing half of your day if you let it. But email marketing is an affordable and highly effective form of marketing for solo and small firms, so the inbox also shouldn’t be ignored. However, you can save a lot of time and hassle with a good strategy and a bit of automation.

Joining us today to help us conquer our inbox is Tom Tate, a marketing specialist with AWeber, creators of a suite of popular email marketing products. I use AWeber for both my law practice and my podcast, and although it’s already helped me save a lot of time, I’m still just scratching the service of what the product offers. The sheer number of options in email service providers such as these can look a little daunting on the surface, but after this episode, I think you’ll see that it’s approachable for almost anyone.

The Law Entrepreneurs has been around for almost three years now, and I don’t have any plans to stop any time soon – and I want to thank all of you for listening, whether you’ve been with me since episode one or this is your first episode. I didn’t get a chance to share my gratitude at the end of 2018 for everything you all have done to support the show, so I wanted to take a moment at the top of the show to thank you all today.

And I’ve been preparing for the rest of 2019 by doing a lot of reading, and today I want to share what I’ve learned so far so that we can all head into the rest of the year a little wiser and a little more prepared.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the American Bar Association’s Techshow 2018, a conference celebrating the intersection of law and technology (so, right up my alley). Here to share what we can expect from this year’s conference is Lincoln Mead, Co-Chair of ABA Techshow 2019 and a Project Manager of Canon Business Process Services.

ABA Techshow will be in Chicago from February 27 - March 2, 2019. You can learn more and register for the show at www.techshow.com.

Jessica Markham is the owner of a family law firm near me in the Maryland and D.C. area, but I actually first came across her as a result of reading an article she wrote for The Daily Record in a column called Generation J.D.

The article was called “Culture eats strategy for breakfast,” and in it she argues that developing a culture in your office is the key to developing a strong practice, for both your employees and your clients – and I don’t think there’s a better example than what Jessica is doing in her own firm, as you’ll hear in this episode.
