Neil is stuck inside on a mediocre snow day, but that doesn’t mean he can’t work – just one of the pros (cons?) of working out of your home that is discussed in this episode. You’ll learn how to set up a virtual home office, what you will need, what important choices you will have to make, and some of the other pros and cons of working at home.

Sahmra A. Stevenson is a solo practitioner in the D.C. area who primarily does family law and estate planning (she describes herself as “The Happy Family Law Attorney,” and it’s an apt description). Sahmra also has an impressive commitment to being a virtual practitioner, or building an Office Without Walls – she even branded one part of her business as Wills on Wheels, a mobile estate planning service that will go to the client, wherever they are located.

It’s a really interesting way to approach a solo law practice, and I think it’s probably the way this industry is going – Sahmra is just way ahead of the curve.

We also discuss the upcoming event CADREcon, where attendees will be introduced to game-changing ideas and strategies from 11 world-class speakers, while getting the opportunity to connect with over 250 CEOs and entrepreneurs. The event will be on Feb. 28th in McLean, VA, and you can get a discount to CADREcon if you use the code “TLE” when you reserve a seat.

Samantha Kelly is a small business owner from Ireland who started using social media to market her business because – and I’m sure many of us small firm practitioners can relate – she didn’t have a marketing budget. By communicating with, helping, and listening to people online, she has become an influencer and sold her niche business.

You’ll learn how Samantha became an influencer, simple strategies for building a community, and how professional services can use Twitter as a platform for engagement, lead generation, and branding.

Emily D. Baker was a Deputy DA in LA County for over 10 years – but, eventually, she wanted greater control over her life. Emily is now the Founder of Ask a Lawyer Now, a service that makes compassionate legal services available to everyone. She has two coaching niches: helping online entrepreneurs start their business legally and preparing individuals for a divorce.

We discuss how starting a business helped Emily attain a greater sense of work-life balance, how to overcome the biggest challenges of opening a small business (or law firm), and what it means to be a self-described “legal-ish life coach.”
