Travis Hornsby is the Founder and “Chief Student Loan Consultant” of Student Loan Planner, a company that helps individuals with six figures of student loan debt reduce the amount or make their payments more manageable. They’ve consulted on over $200 million in student debt and found more than $45 million in forecasted student loan savings.

Given the fact that so many attorneys are struggling under tremendous amounts of student loan debt, this is a really important and valuable service for those of us choosing to be law entrepreneurs.

Amy Mann is the Marketing & Communications Director for LawPay, what I consider the premiere online credit card processing solution for solo and small law firms. I like to share the services that I personally use – because, well, they work! – and I’ve been using LawPay for many years.

We discuss how secure credit card processing can take a lot of the worry out of billing, payment in a world where mobile devices are everywhere, and the surprising number of firms that still don’t accept credit card payments at all.

Diana Stepleton is the VP of Partner Engagement at Ruby Receptionists, a live remote reception service that I’ve been using for years. Whether you are in a virtual setting, a shared setting, or a traditional brick and mortar environment, there are a lot of advantages to outsourcing the receptionist function.

We explore how virtual receptionists can be used to make a small or solo firm more efficient, and why a service that always answers your clients’ calls with a real person is so valuable.

Douglas Lusk is the Founder/CEO of the National Society for Legal Technology (NSLT) and the creator of the Legal Technology Certificate. I think he’s on the cusp of something huge, and he hasn’t even graduated law school yet!

This legal technology training program addresses a problem that most attorneys struggle with: How do I comply with the new ethical rules requiring competence in technology when there are no resources in my law firm or law school to do so (and without investing in expensive software packages)?

Doug figured it out and, after just one year, his program has been included in the curriculum of over 70 law schools. On top of that, he’s talking to bar associations about finally introducing CLE on software instruction – a much-needed improvement. Doug offers an elegant solution to a growing problem, and I’m excited to see how it develops.

Kathleen Hyland is a solo Consumer Protection Attorney based out of Baltimore. We’ve talked to dozens of solo and small firm practitioners on the show, but Kat is actually our first consumer rights advocate. I was excited to talk to Kat because many aspects of this niche practice area are actually pertinent to all solo and small firm practitioners, such as the burden of student loan debt.

Kat is also an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland, Francis King Carey School of Law, where she teaches in the Law Practice Management space. Most law schools don’t pay nearly enough attention to this topic, so it’s refreshing to hear how Kat approaches it in her class.

Joshua Lenon is the Lawyer in Residence at Clio, a cloud-based practice management platform (and the most widely used by solo practitioners and small firms).

In this episode, we speak broadly about how practice management software benefits attorneys, how you can leverage these platforms to achieve greater efficiency and productivity, the unique factors sets Clio apart, and the promising future of project management.

Lee Ferris is a Product Manager at CHL Software, but he’s probably best known in the legal community for creating DocMoto, a high-performance document and email management system designed specifically for organizations running Mac networks. While DocMoto is for Macs, the functionalities and capabilities we discuss in this episode are widely available on Windows networks too, and this conversation is helpful for anyone wondering if they need a document management system in their business.

I honestly wasn’t entirely sure what benefits a robust document management system afforded solo or small law practices, so I invited Lee onto the show to explain them – and I learned a ton!

As a followup to last week’s show (in which we talked to Nakia Gray about using online video as a marketing tool), I invited Victor Medina back on the show to dive deeper into the nuts and bolts of developing video marketing systems within your law firm.

If you aren’t familiar with Victor, you’re in for a treat. He is an estate planning & elder law attorney, a financial planner, the person behind MacTrack Legal, an author, and the host of Make it Last Radio. He has a lot of insight to share, and lately he’s been killing it with video content marketing.

I talked to Nakia Gray almost 100 episodes ago about her blossoming solo practice and virtual business. Today, that business has grown, so I invited her back to have a conversation about how attorneys can use speaking engagements and online presentations as a vehicle for branding and marketing their law firms.

I met today’s guest, Tiffany O'Connell, in a marketing group a few years ago, and since then her small firm in Massachusetts has grown and thrived. We discuss Tiff’s transition from insurance defense to estate planning and elder law (one area of law she never expected to be in),, how she leverages guest bloggers to create more valuable online content, and other strategies she’s used to grow the firm in just a few short years.

Sahmra A. Stevenson is a solo practitioner in the D.C. area who primarily does family law and estate planning (she describes herself as “The Happy Family Law Attorney,” and it’s an apt description). Sahmra also has an impressive commitment to being a virtual practitioner, or building an Office Without Walls – she even branded one part of her business as Wills on Wheels, a mobile estate planning service that will go to the client, wherever they are located.

It’s a really interesting way to approach a solo law practice, and I think it’s probably the way this industry is going – Sahmra is just way ahead of the curve.

Samantha Kelly is a small business owner from Ireland who started using social media to market her business because – and I’m sure many of us small firm practitioners can relate – she didn’t have a marketing budget. By communicating with, helping, and listening to people online, she has become an influencer and sold her niche business.

You’ll learn how Samantha became an influencer, simple strategies for building a community, and how professional services can use Twitter as a platform for engagement, lead generation, and branding.

Emily D. Baker was a Deputy DA in LA County for over 10 years – but, eventually, she wanted greater control over her life. Emily is now the Founder of Ask a Lawyer Now, a service that makes compassionate legal services available to everyone. She has two coaching niches: helping online entrepreneurs start their business legally and preparing individuals for a divorce.

We discuss how starting a business helped Emily attain a greater sense of work-life balance, how to overcome the biggest challenges of opening a small business (or law firm), and what it means to be a self-described “legal-ish life coach.”

Chelsey Lambert is a veteran of the Legal Technology space (with experience as both a vendor and an educator) who runs Lex Tech Review, a blog that translates legal technology for real-world attorneys. Chelsey recently published a free 200-page Legal Technology Buyer’s Guide reviewing hundreds of the different products and services that are available to solo and mid-size law firms.

Jeff Miller has had a tremendous positive impact on my local community, and he has been able to do this because he is a business coach and entrepreneur – he learned early on that if you can impact the life of a business owner, it will have a ripple effect on their family, schools, and community.

Jeff shares how, as small business owners, we can leverage our businesses as vehicles for positive change (and, ultimately, grow our businesses in the process).
